carolyn and kyle – engagement chapel hill

I met Carolyn and Kyle at the Old Well on campus in Chapel Hill for their engagement session. We had so much fun walking around campus, shooting at all the big landmarks. I apparently have a thing now for shooting in front of and through fountains. I loved being on campus, since I rarely get to go now that I moved back home. It makes me feel really old seeing all the young kids that are walking around like I did now 15 years ago. I lived in the dorm near the Bell Tower, so that is my favorite place on campus and I was glad they wanted to shoot there. It’s really super tall, so that was challenging. We were actually able to get into Kenan Stadium, because they were cleaning up from Saturday’s game. The shots at the end are at the weird angle, because a huge stinking garbage truck was backed in there. I love the shots we were able to get.

Carolyn and Kyle are an example of how powerful the slideshows that I do for all my sessions are. Carolyn was a roommate to one of Jill’s friends and doesn’t really even know Jill. Their mutual friend after seeing Jill’s slideshow, emailed Carolyn the link and she contacted me. Then, when I met them, I found out that they are from my hometown and went to my high school. That is a full circle, meant to be, connection, right? Thanks to Jill and her friend, Rachael, for thinking enough of me to recommend me to their friends!!!!

I am excited about Carolyn and Kyle’s wedding at Fearrington House next June!

margaret and josh – engagement raleigh

I had the pleasure of spending some time with Margaret and Josh the last time I was in Raleigh for a wedding. They are getting married in January in Asheville at the Bascilica with their reception at On Broadway. They found me at the bridal show last January. Since they live in Raleigh, I was excited about doing their engagement session there. We met at the Raleigh Rose Garden, which is so beautiful. I love the arbor that they have and all the gorgeous roses. Then, we went to Hillsborough St. across from NC State. I was super excited that we went to Mitch’s Tavern, the site of their first date and also where Josh proposed. The next stop was Schoolkid’s Records – a favorite college hang out. I LOVE this engagement session and thank Margaret and Josh for trusting me to do something outside the box. I am looking forward to their wedding in January.

bridal show

I exhibited at the Wedding Festivals bridal show in Asheville. I completely redesigned my booth, which makes for a lot of extra stress. I thought it turned out awesome! At the previous bridal shows, my booth had been as many framed photos as I could possibly get into the alloted space. I was so excited about showing off my new digital images and didn’t want to have a bunch of old film images. Several people that stopped told me how much they loved my look. I was glad to see a few of my brides for upcoming weddings there. It always encourages me to have supportive people around me. A tremendous thank you goes out to my fellow photographers and friends, Corey and Michael, for all their help!

heather and clay

Heather and Clay had a small wedding at the Walnut Lane Bed and Breakfast near Greensboro. We were fighting the heat and had to go in to cool off before the family photos, but otherwise, they had a wonderful day. Heather and Clay are a very special couple and you can see how much in love they are! Both of them had lost their mothers, so it was a sentimental and emotional day. Both dads looked so proud and happy. Clay’s dad was sitting off to the side quietly watching for a while and he told me that Heather reminded him so much of Clay’s mother and how much she would have loved her. Heather did an amazing job of putting everything together herself and had some awesome friends and family that helped. She is an excellent example of the bride trying to do too much, but she pulled it off and wasn’t all stressed out. I am so happy to have been part of their special day and wish them all the best!

pictage partner conference – los angeles

Pictage is the company that I use for my online posting of images and a great photo lab. One of the best things about Pictage is that they want their photographers to succeed and help with my business. The photography community and support that has grown from Pictage is great! I went to Los Angeles to their annual Partner Conference for 2 days. It was the most awesome experience. I don’t know of any other company that brings in the industry leaders to give advice to their peers. Two of the biggest names in wedding photography: Denis Reggie and Mike Colon gave presentations. The new up and coming photographers that are really popular also held sessions. I attended the ones by David Jay, Jules Bianchi, Davina Fear, Jefferson Todd and Me Ra Koh.
me and Jules
I had an awesome mentoring session with Jules Bianchi. We were able to bid (like ebay) on the photographer we wanted to mentor with and it was for Thirst Relief. I was lucky that I placed my bid for who I wanted and got it! Jules is a boutique-style photographer from California. I have stalked her blog for months! She has a great personal style and it carries through her work and her branding. She won the album design contest held by Pictage. So, she was a great help with talking to me about albums and branding.

me and davina (taken by davina)
I have been a big fan of Davina Fear’s since I first saw her work several months ago. Her photos are FUN. She has been a great inspiration to me for stepping outside the box and getting couples to do more fun engagement shots. I was having a hard time getting couples not to just want to do the same cliche poses looking at me and looking at each other. I think if you look at my engagement gallery, you will see Davina’s influence. I never try to shot like another photographer, but love the ideas behind her photos. She is so stinking cool!

I have to do a “shout out” to my friend Jeffrey LaNuez from Arizona. We met in April at the Denis Reggie workshop and I was happy to get to visit with him and his lovely wife Denise in LA. Congratulations on getting your new business going and on your awesome website. Wishing you all the best!!!
